About the 2011 Census teacher's kit

The Statistics Canada 2011 Census Teacher's Kit is provided free of charge, for use in elementary, intermediate and secondary schools, as well as for adult education classes across the country. Students play important roles as future respondents to the census and translators to parents whose language skills are not strong in either of Canada's official languages.
Each Teacher’s Kit contains eight teacher-ready activities and a guide that provides:

  • an explanation of why Canada conducts a census and how census results benefit us all
  • an introduction to census data as an information source for school papers and projects
  • an alternative approach to studying mathematics, geography, English, French, and social sciences
  • an introduction to data available on the Statistics Canada website
  • a colouring book and activity sheet for younger students.

The activities have been prepared with the help of a professional educator and have been classroom-tested in English and French for content suitability and grade level. Activities are appropriate for classes in English, mathematics, theatre arts, art, social sciences, geography, history, family studies, and physical education. Suggested grade levels are indicated on each activity, and all necessary tables, charts, graphs and data are included. A teacher requires one kit from which student handout sheets can be photocopied.

About the 2011 Census Adult Education Kit

The Adult Education Kit was developed for recent immigrants to Canada, adult literacy learners and beginner to intermediate English as a second language/French as a second language ESL/FSL learners. The kit explains what a census is and why it is important, how Canada’s census works, the questions that are asked with special attention to safeguarding respondent confidentiality, and how the information is processed.

The instructor’s guide provides information for those working with adults, particularly Adult Basic Education (ABE) and English or French as a second language (ESL/FSL).
